Rajinikanth’s latest film, Vettaiyan, has entered into its second weekend at the box office. The investigative action drama kept dropping throughout its first week, and collected in the range of Rs 2.65 crore nett on its second Friday. The total collection of the film after nine days at the domestic box office stands at around Rs 124.80 crore nett, reported the trade website Sacnilk.
Directed by TJ Gnanavel, the film opened on a massive note in the Dussehra (extended) weekend and earned Rs 31.7 crore. However, the numbers constantly kept going down after that. In the case of a Rajinikanth blockbuster, the collections only go up after the opening day, at least during the first weekend. This was not the case with Vettaiyan, though.
The popular Tamil film, which also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Rana Daggubati and Fahad Faasil in important roles, finished its first week run at the box office by minting around Rs 122.15 crore nett in India. Out of this, around Rs 105.07 crore nett came from India alone, while the Telugu versions contributed Rs 13.58 crore nett.
Meanwhile, the makers of Vettaiyan wished to make a prequel to the film. During a media interaction in Hyderabad recently, director Gnanavel announced that he is deeply inspired by the subject of police encounter killing and would like to explore more on the same lines in the prequel.
“I’m more interested in developing a prequel that could dive deeper into Athiyan’s journey. This adds layers to the existing story. Encounter killings have always affected me when I read about them in the news. This film challenges whether these encounters are justified or fabricated, revealing what seems straightforward often has deeper issues,” he explained to the Hyderabad media over a zoom call.
Vettaiyan, produced by Subaskaran Allirajah’s Lyca Productions, was released on October 10.
